ALAMEDA — October 26, 2026. With winter approaching, the City of Alameda is warning coastal households that high tides and severe rain can combine to raise flooding risk, particularly in low-lying shoreline neighborhoods. The city is asking residents to register for emergency alerts and take advantage of sandbags and municipal flood-preparation resources before storms arrive.
Dates when unusually high tides are anticipated
In its October public preparedness communications, the city identifies periods of high tides around November 24–26, December 22–25, 2026, and January 20–23, 2027. A king tide can cause coastal flooding even without heavy rainfall; precipitation, high winds and elevated sea levels can worsen impacts. These are periods of potential risk, not predictions that every street will flood.
Where residents can obtain sandbags
The city’s current preparedness materials identify self-service locations at Lexington Street and West Hope Street, Washington Park, 1300 Eighth Street, and Grandview Pavilion, 300 Island Drive on Bay Farm Island. The city notes sandbag supplies are limited, and public works guidance describes a limit of five free sandbags per resident or household under its posted rules. Residents should check the current site details, identity requirements and stock before making a special trip.
Emergency contacts
For flood hazards, fallen branches or signals affected by storms, Alameda Public Works lists 510-747-7900 during business hours and 510-337-8340 for evening and weekend reports. Life-threatening emergencies require 911.
The city maintains 4,392 storm drain inlets and catch basins and 10 pump stations, with storm-season inspections. Residents can register for AC Alert and look up their location on the official emergency mapping platform rather than rely on a neighbor’s warning for a different block.
